BLACK PIT SKETCHES...Jevlin Voyles

An Attempt to do another art lesson from the book Fabulous Things to Draw. January 27, 2016. Rabbits. I consider this attempt a failure.

An attempt to do another art lesson. I consider this one a success. Mummy done on January 28, 2016.

Attempt to do an art lesson. LADYBUG. January 28, 2016. I consider this one a failure.

Above:
LIZARD art lesson done on January28, 2016. I don't consider this one a failure but also don't consider it a success.

Attempt at art lessons from Fabulous Things to Draw. I consider the mouse a failure and the PEGUIN and PELICAN successes. January 29, 2016.

Art lesson from the internet, not the Fabulous Things to Draw book. I consider this one mostly success except for the back legs and maybe some issues with the back end of its back. January 29, 2016.

On January 29, the day I did some of these sketches, A depression began to come over me and by the end of the day I had hit close to rock bottom. I'm shocked at how I fell so far into the pit in only one day. Yesterday was almost as bad. I ate at McDonald's last night and while I ate I felt like no hope for any future. Today was bad and so I kept myself busy working on the 1976 page of the Elizabeth Deer Story website I'm building. By keeping my mind busy I've kept myself from dwelling on things I don't want to face right now.

CLEARLY A LONG WAY TO GO...Jevlin Voyles

Above, left: The cover of a book called Fabulous Things to Draw. It's the book from which I've done a few drawing lessons for this blog. The Polar Bear, Honey Bee, Seahorse and Dolphin were all lessons from the book.
Above, right: Clown Fish and Humpback Whale. These were both lessons from the book. Both were failures. The problem with the whale is that I drew the back of the whale way to small for the front.

Above: Drawing based on a panel from an issue of Eerie magazine. The issue was actually part of a hardbound book of Eerie magazine reproductions which I got from a website called Paperbackswap. I call the sketch Eerie Scientist

Above: My sketch which is a variation on the Eerie Scientist.

Above: Earlier on the day I drew this picture I had written some material in which I discussed the band Guns N Roses. The band had also been in recent Yahoo trending articles in regards to the band's reunion plans. The above drawing was originally based on Duff, the band's bass player. In the original sketch it kind of looked like Duff. Acter I added red and blue to the sketch it made the pencil drawing look faded and light so I went in and darkened some of the lines with a pencil. In doing this I made the sketch look much less like Duff than originally.

Above: An ELEPHANT doodle I drew while watching an episode of Family Guy on Hulu.

The Whale / Clown fish, Eerie Scientist, Scientist sketch, Duff and Elephant were all drawn on January 19, 2016.

Above: These pages were drawn on January 22, 2016. They are design ideas for a character called a Puglaphant. The character is supposed to be a genetic hybrid between an elephant and a pug dog.

Above is my first attempt at drawing the classic horror film character The Fly. Below is my second attempt to draw the same character.

Above is my first attempt at dong the GRASSHOPPER LESSON from the art book. Below is my second attempt at doing the lesson. The drawings were done on January 22, 2016.

Above is a doodle I did on January 22, 2016. The purpose was not to try and make a good drawing. I was simply drying to experiment with mixing two colors of markers.

Above are drawings of a bird and a dragonfly. Both are lessons from the book Fabulous Things to Draw. The body of the dragonfly looks like a carrot.
Below is a picture of the MONOPOLY guy which I drew while waiting for the other pictures to upload to Blogger.com. The Dragonfly, Bird and Monopoly Man were all done on Sunday January 24, 2016.

LESSONS & SKETCHES ... Jevlin Voyles

Top and Middle are sketches done from step-by-step lessons. The first, SEAHORSE LESSON was done from the same lesson book at the previously posted Polar Bear, Honey Bee and Dolphin. The second sketch is a failed attempt to draw a pug from a step-by-step lesson downloaded off the internet. The third GARGOYLE picture was done in either acrylic or watercolor. The GARGOYLE was done sometime in December of 2015, the SEAHORSE was done on January 6, 2015 and the failed pug was done on January 8, 2016.

DAY ON THE HILL 2015 ... Jevlin Voyles

This is the artwork I submitted to Art for Awareness / Day on the Hill in Nashville (2015). This art hung on the wall of Legislative Plaza in Nashville for several months (Six, I think).

The day after the artwork was displayed, a woman named Cyera asked me to create a piece of art for her. I created the art and gave it to her on May 9, 2015. Though I didn't make a scan of the poster I did take some pictures of it the night before I presented it to her. Below are some images of the Cyera poster.

When I created the poster for Cyera I referred to it as COLLAGE but later I came across the word PHOTOBASH online and think that maybe this also qualifies as PHOTOBASH technique. I plan on re-creating two of the three panels of the Cyera poster as new art pieces at some point. This "photobash" technique is one I am very interested in as it will allow me to create artwork filled with complex hidden messages. My plan is to continue creating these photobash collages and to write essays that explain the hidden messages within the artwork.

THE BEGINNING OF IT ALL...Jevlin Voyles

The purpose of this blog is to document my progress in learning to draw and the creation of art. I hope others will also take part. Others will be invited and they will be given the choice of using their real name of a pseudonym.

Below are two pictures I drew on January 15, 2016. The first is a GOBLIN drawn on black paper with Crayola color pencils. The second is WOMAN, drawn on black paper with colored pencils. Not sure what the brand name of the pencils were.

Above are two "closed eye" drawings. I saw a video on YouTube in which an artist blindfolded herself, then drew and colored a drawing. I did something similar. With my eyes closed I drew the basic outline of a face; eyes, nose, lips, head outline and neck. Then I opened my eyes and took the rough sketch and turned it into a picture. PERSON IN A RED shirt was done first on January 3, 2016. Then I did CIGARETTE MAN the same day. I used a sketch pencil and colored pencils on sketchbook paper. When I drew the eyes for CIGARETTE MAN I drew them way too big and so I changed the eyes to sunglasses and drew new eyes within the lenses of the glasses. The ears on CIGARETTE MAN are far from right, I know.

Above are three sketches which resulted in my doing lessons from a drawing book for kids. It's one of those books where it shows you how to first draw the shapes of the thing in circles, then add more shapes then add more detail until you're finished. The POLAR BEAR LESSON  and the HONEY BEE LESSON were done on January 14, 2016 while the DOLPHIN LESSON was done on January 15, 2016.
